Argentina trip: Day 2

This morning we leave the house at 9.30 am. People in Argentina have different schedules than we have in the USA. They start late in the morning, have lunch at 1pm, have a siesta for 2 hours and have dinner at 9pm and go to bed by midnight.
Argentina is a very rich country with very many natural resources, unfortunately the government is very corrupt and dont let the people come to their potential. Traffic is crazy, I am sure there are rules, but nobody keeps them. There are hardly no police man, it is a very low paying job. Looks like most people live in cages. Argentine people are very nice and relaxed and love to talk. They are not wealthy, if you want to make bucks, you have to work for the government.

The dairies are very simple. Usually a milk barn, with cows running around every where in big lots. Many like to build freestalls, but the government is not willing to give dairyman credit. The government want the people to farm soya and beef for export to mostly China.

I did visit a new dairy, milking 3000 cows. Its the first one of this project and they are planning to build 6 more, milking a total of 20000 cows. This project is financed by no one else than George Soros, the investment banker. For a while I thought I was back in California, the dairies are exactly modeled after some big US dairies. There is so much land and so much feed. I think they have a great future as long as the government does not intervere.

As far as bulls the dairy man have same criteria as in US: conception, conception, conception

Today, Roberto, Javier ( our distributor) and myself leave Perigimo and took a 3 hour drive into now where and finally arrived at a dairy.
The dairy man welcomed us in his office and told me the history of his place, he owns 100.000 hectare, farms about 5000 and milks about 1000 cows, very impressive
He invites us in the house and opens the bottles of wine roberto took along, you always bring 2 bottles, one looks cheap.
After the wine and cheese he wants to show me his pets: Lions, tigers and pumas.
Then we have to stay for dinner, which is a BBQ, a lot of meat and testicals. Since I am the guest of honer, i can not refuse and have to eat testicals
The mood was good and I played some songs on the piano.
After lunch, we are all showed to a bedroom, where we have to take a nap for about 2 hours
When we wake up, it is 4pm and we take the jeep to see his cows. They are all in open lots and everywhere. He has about a 100 Theo dtrs running around, they are breeding age.
He told me that Theo is the best conception bull he ever used.
At about 6 pm we left after putting 100 Big Daddy and 100 Rocky in his tank

Sierra Desert Breeders April 2012 Proof week update

Spring time is finally here, and after some much needed rain inCalifornia the poppies start blooming. Excitement is in the air and after this great proof run we are more than ready for the next 4 months.

Many of our original bulls added many daughters and are well over 90% reliable and guess what: They all went up in milk!!!!

Bulls like 506H102 Reliance, 506H110 Donald, 506H116 Big Daddy are as good as any other bull in the breed with reliability of 92%.

Also in the calving ease department we have a lot to offer. More than half of our proven bulls are 7% or smaller in calving ease. Bulls like 506H151 Heirloom, 506H113 Magician and 506H114 Revolution are hard to beat.

A bull that I think needs attention is 506H223 Suntan. He has a few daughters in his proof now and what I hear they are awesome heifers.
He is officially a proven bull with 2013 GTPI, 97 lbs fat and protein. Nate Cosseboom, our rep in Maine, told me the other day: ”When they hid the ground, they start growing and they don’t stop”. Some studs used him already as a sire of sons because of his unique pedigree (no Oman, Shottle, Goldwyn). The daughters are big, strong cows, all white, with beautiful udders, very good feet and legs, that give a lot of milk. You have to protect him for calving ease.

We added a few new genomic bulls: 506H251 Glass, he is a Plato out of a full sister to Gerard. 506H246 TJ, High type Goldwyn son with good milk out of Toystory’s family. 506H247 Froggy and 506H250 Castaway, our high LNM$ bulls are still up there with super health traits, high $LNM and high GTPI.

Our son out of Missy, “The people’s choice in 2011”, 506H249 Mr Big is turning out to be one of her best sons available in AI today.

In the jerseys, 506J171 Bellringer added a lot of daughters and went up in milk. Also 506J298 Fanatic and 506J299 Durango had a good day and stayed up there, having a JPI of 184 and 196.

Semen Sales Save Lives: Right To Life

SDB Promotes Right To Life

It’s February again! February is our favorite month of the year at Sierra Desert Breeders! Not only do we have the World Ag Expo the second Tuesday to Thursday of this month, but we “Promote Right to Life” – more specifically Tulare/Kings Right To Life (TKRTL)! Dairymen in the Tulare/Kings county donate 25% of their Sierra Desert Breeders semen bill to TKRTL. We have had but little resistance from our customers, in fact, this promotion is becoming a favorite for many of our customers and we are happy to be able to have a chance to help out this great organization that fights for life each and every day!

We are Pro-Life because it is our Christian duty to protect all human life especially the unborn and the aged to natural death. But why is it that nearly all dairymen are Pro-Life? I think it is because dairymen have the chance to see baby calves being born ever single day! Pregnant cows are the most important thing on a dairy and they know that there is a living calf inside! We get the opportunity to palpate these cows and feel legs heads and tails inside the cow womb! The dirty trick of the Pro-Choice group of telling people that there is nothing but tissue mass inside the womb just does not fly with dairymen! Not only do we all get a chance to palpate many of us now are able to ultra sound cows at an early stage of pregnancy and we are able to see all the correct calf parts with our own eyes very early in the pregnancy! I also think that there is another reason why dairymen are mostly Pro-Life: Family! Dairying is hard work! It takes lots of hands and minds to get everything done in a days time. Many dairy families are larger than average because historically they need more workers to get all the cows milked!

All in all, Wout and I are very happy to work for people that have the same basic morals as we do. I couldn’t imagine having to work with people each day that their philosophy on life is complete opposite of us.

OK! When I started this blog I went with free hosting because I really didn’t think I was going to be blogging much and I like “FREE”. Now a few months later it has really taken off and are getting lots of views! It has become a great way for me to communicate with my readers and customers, but more it has become a great place for me to go off on rants and more rants! So I decided I needed to upgrade my hosting to a paid account so I can make this blog even better. So…..in the mean time I need you to do a few quick things for me!

OK, 1st week of #BullChat was a success! Great participation and looks like we have lots of work to do! If we are going to make this a successful chat we are going to need to:

Setup an email account for moderators
Setup a Twitter account
Find moderators that specialize in certain areas
Get a calender for future topics
